PowerPerks FAQs

What is PowerPerksSM?

AEP Energy’s PowerPerks is an exclusive offering for existing customers with a Firm All-Inclusive Price Plan to have the opportunity to earn money for using less power during periods of high demand, while helping overall grid reliability.1 The best part of the program? Participation is voluntary and without penalty, which means you decide whether your business participates.

What does it cost?

Nothing. This exclusive program is free to eligible AEP Energy customers.

Who is eligible?

AEP Energy customers with interval meter(s) and an existing Fixed Price All-Inclusive (FPAI) plan during the summer following the PowerPerks term are eligible to participate in PowerPerks.

How does PowerPerks work?

PowerPerks is a free annual program that runs from June 1 through May 31 of the following year. When a high-demand day is anticipated, we will send an email notification by 12:00 pm (EPT), a day prior to the projected event that identifies the projected peak hours. By 12:00 pm (EPT) on the day of the anticipated event, we will send an email either confirming or cancelling the event. In the event of an unanticipated high-demand day, we will send an email notification at least two hours prior to the event.

Your business has the option to participate by reducing energy consumption during the event or not, without any penalty or fees. If you choose to participate, you can earn at least $500 per megawatt-hour (MWh) of reduced consumption (Note that the actual payment rate will be specified in the “Reduction Notice” sent prior to the event).  Payment will be made to you in the form of a check or bill credit in December and May of the relevant PJM planning year (June 1 – May 31), subject to applicable terms and conditions.1

How much can I earn by participating?

The amount you earn is dependent on how often you decide to participate and how much electricity you reduce each hour during a high-demand period. You will earn at least $500 for each megawatt-hour (MWh) of energy you reduce during the events.

When will I receive my payment?

At the end of December and May of each relevant PJM planning year (June 1 – May 31), AEP Energy will send you a summary of your PowerPerks earnings, followed with your payment in the form of a bill credit or check payment, subject to applicable terms and conditions and depending on how you are eligible to receive your reward payment.1

Are there any restrictions or requirements about how I reduce energy?

You decide what systems or equipment can be adjusted based on your business needs.  You may choose to turn off non-critical systems, change thermostats, and adjust lights; however, you cannot however transfer load to an emergency generator.

How much does it cost to participate?

There is no cost to participate in PowerPerks. In fact, you actually can earn money by conserving energy.

Do I need any special software, equipment, or other technology?

No. There are no equipment, no technology, no downloads, no wires, and no regulatory programs needed.

How will my energy reduction be measured?

For each event, AEP Energy looks at how much energy was used versus how much energy you used in the same hours on similar days when there were no events, among other factors.

Why should I sign up?

Your business can enjoy savings on your monthly bill by reducing consumption and may earn money during the same process. In addition, this free program is voluntary, so that means you decide whether your business participates.

How do I enroll?

It’s simple to enroll. Simply complete the PowerPerks online enrollment form or contact your AEP Energy Sales Representative.
